CENTRAL SAANICH – A 44 year old Vancouver Island man is dead and two family members are recovering from smoke inhalation after flames ripped through a home on the Tsartlip First Nation.
As the fire consumed the single-wide trailer on Tsartlip Road shortly before 5pm Thursday family and neighbors could only stand back and watch.
Two were taken to hospital after their attempts at a rescue were met with locked doors and a wall of smoke and flames. They were released from hospital early Friday morning.
As firefighters entered what was left of the trailer they found the body of a man who would later be identified as Joe Henry Jr. in the bedroom.
Tsartlip Chief Ivan Wayne Morris tells CTV News as many as 8 people were bunking in the trailer with Henry, although he was the only person living there on a permanent basis.
“It’s a sad situation for all of us in terms of housing” he says, “if people have no place to live or no place to go they will often go to extended family and they will provide for them. That was the situation last night.”
The investigation into a cause is just beginning but Chief Morris tells CTV News investigators removed an appliance from the trailer for further inspection.

VICTORIA – It was a year that will be remembered for its departures, arrivals, and delays.
From the scrapping of the Harmonized Sales Tax to the return of the Western Hockey League, the year had its moments on Vancouver Island.
In April a tanker truck tipped on the Malahat spilling thousands of litres of fuel into Goldstream River. The incident was one of many that caused delays on the highway this year.
Many argue the debate surrounding the Johnson Street Bridge was one of the biggest stories of 2011.
Others say BC’s new shipbuilding contract awarded in October and worth 8 billion dollars was the year’s top story. They argue the contract will have longest-lasting impact of any story to emerge in the past year.
Most are unsure or are undecided on the year’s top story.
One coffee shop owner says it’s the personal stories he’ll remember. He says it’s the personal stories that make 2011 a year he’ll remember.

VICTORIA – New Year’s Eve is expected to be a busy one as always in downtown Victoria. The Victoria Police Department says it will have every available member out on patrol. From foot and bike police, to those manning road blocks, they would like to remind everyone that they will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers, and open alcohol on the streets.
Cab companies are ready for the onslaught of calls and trips, Yellow Cab will have more than one-hundred cars and drivers on the road.
BC Transit is offering free service from 6:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. and night service on routes 4, 6, and 14.
And while restaurants are busy there are still some with room to get in on the last feast of 2011. From Pescatores Seafood to The Empress seats were held to accommodate those looking for a last minute place to celebrate.

OAK BAY – It’s another case of a live-aboard vessel turning heads on Vancouver Island.
Shortly after midnight Thursday a large vessel anchored near the Oak Bay Marina burst into flames. The owner was removed by another boater. He later told fire officials he was having troubles with his diesel stove.
Oak Bay Fire Department worked alongside the Oak Bay Auxiliary Coastguard. Around 3:30am the coastguard called off the effort to let the fire burn out naturally.
As crowds formed along the shore, the vessel eventually went under around 11:00am.
The Canadian Coastguard has determined the vessel will not have an environmental impact. Transport Canada will determine whether the vessel is a nautical obstruction. The sailboat’s mast is roughly ten feet above water and its markers still function.
The owner of the vessel was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The dog died on board.

VICTORIA – The flu season’s starting to kick into high gear now and the strain is worse than last year.
Doctor Bonnie Henry with the BC Centre for Disease Control says we’re starting to see an increase in activity now and the type of influenza showing up is one called H3N2.
She says that strain causes more severe reaction especially in adults and older people whose immune systems may not be able to fight off the virus.
People in high risk categories such as over sixty-five years of age, immune deficient and healthcare workers should be immunized. However healthy people should also consider getting the vaccine to avoid spreading the bug.
