CAMERON RIVER – The body of a 26 year old Nanaimo kayaker has been recovered from the banks of the Cameron River just outside of Port Alberni. RCMP say yesterday two best friends from Nanaimo set out to test their skills on the extreme, and challenging river, but despite years of experience the powerful rapids proved deadly. Port Alberni RCMP report the two men were taking on expert level rapids Tuesday afternoon when one paddler’s kayak overturned. The rivers unforgiving current offered no time to correct the mistake as the small vessel and its rider were wedged beneath a floating log.

“The surviving kayaker was able to pull his friend from the water,” said Cpl. Jen Allan, “but despite his attempts to recessitate him the man died.” Realizing the frigid waters had taken his best friend, and roommate the 37 year old Nanaimo man began to hike for kilometres to find cell phone reception. Exhausted and emotionally distraught he was rescued, but search and rescue teams had to wait until the next morning to recover the drowned mans body.

The surviving kayaker has been offered RCMP counselling. The name of the deceased has not be given to media.

VIEW ROYAL – At least one business is open and honest about its plans.

Joseph’s Coffee House opened after the HST came into effect. The owner says she hasn’t raised her prices since but will April 1st 2013. She feels her customers won’t mind as the price they will pay will be the same in the end.

Other businesses say they will not raise prices.

The Westshore Chamber of Commerce warns that people may not like paying 7 percent more when they know the HST is no more. It wonders if the market can continue to bear the current costs.
