Astrid Braunschmidt

Astrid Braunschmidt is a Weather Host and Reporter for CTV News. She joined the CTV News team as a Videographer in 2001. Her passion for storytelling has taken Astrid all over Vancouver Island, and around the world.

In 2008, Astrid travelled to Uganda with the international aid group Watoto to profile their efforts in caring for AIDS orphans and rehabilitating former child soldiers.

Astrid grew up in Greater Victoria, studied at the University of Victoria, and graduated from Camosun College’s Applied Communications Program.

Prior to joining CTV News, Astrid worked for Shaw Cable locally and for radio stations in Honolulu, Hawaii. She recently hosted a series produced for the Provincial Capital Commission that reached out to all British Columbians wanting to celebrate and learn more about Greater Victoria’s history.

Awards:

  • RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award in Hard News Reporting for her 2010 investigation of an owner of a burnt derelict tugboat abandoned in Sooke Harbour
  • Nominated for a YM-YWCA Women of Distinction award in the Communications and Public Relations category

Education:

  • Applied Communications Diploma — Camosun College (Victoria, BC)

Extracurricular:
Astrid enjoys the outdoors with her family, but refuses to camp! She can be found on the ski slopes in the winter and at the beach or lake during the summer. Astrid also has a passion for travel but in recent years has spent time closer to home, exploring the hidden gems on Vancouver Island.
