News Director / Senior News Anchor
Hudson Mack is part of the fabric of the community on Vancouver Island and is an enduring figure in Canada’s broadcasting industry.
Hudson has been covering news on Vancouver Island since coming to Victoria in 1985. He joined CTV News in 2004 as Senior Anchor and Director of News and Information Programming, after 19 years as Senior Anchor and Assistant News Director at CHEK TV.
Since joining CTV News, Hudson has led the team to more than 40 industry awards. Among them, 23 international Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), including Overall Excellence, Best Newscast, and Best Investigative Reporting six years running. Other awards include numerous regional and national honours from RTDNA Canada, including Best Newscast and Best Live Events Coverage. CTV News has also been honoured twice by the BC Association of Broadcasters for Excellence in News Coverage, and won the 2011 Jack Webster Award for Best TV News Reporting in British Columbia.
Hudson’s commitment to the community is reflected in his participation with numerous charities and community initiatives, including the United Way, Victoria Hospitals Foundation, Jeneece Place, and the Canadian Cancer Society, among others. Hudson was a member of the 2009 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team, cycling the length of Vancouver Island to raise money and awareness for children’s cancer programs and research. Hudson set an individual record for fundraising with more than $146,000 raised. In 2002, after receiving the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, he hosted a luncheon for the Royal Couple as the Queen embarked on her jubilee tour of Canada. His commitment to the community also includes service to the Canadian Forces. From 2007 to 2011, he served as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 741 Communications Squadron in Victoria.
Hudson has also made a significant contribution to the broadcasting industry in Canada. He served nearly two decades, from 1990 until 2008, in the Board of Directors of the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), including two terms as RTDNA Canada President, and he represented Canada on the Board of RTDNA International from 2002 until 2008. He has served since 1997 as BC Regional Vice-Chair of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. Hudson is also former chair of the broadcast National Editorial Committee of the Canadian Press. He also helps educate future generations of broadcasters, sitting on the Curriculum Advisory Panel for the Broadcast Journalism program at the BC Institute of Technology and on the Advisory Council for the School of Communication at Royal Roads University.
Broadcasting and community service is a family affair for the Calgary native. Hudson’s father, Clarence Mack, posthumously inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame, had the long-running Calgary morning radio show ‘Toast and Marmalade’ at CFAC radio, and his late brother Gary Mack (a.k.a. Byron MacGregor) pioneered ‘20/20 News’ during his ground-breaking career in radio at CKLW in Windsor/Detroit. Hudson’s career began in the BC interior in 1980 at CJFC TV and Radio in Kamloops and CKPG TV and Radio in Prince George.
